The ultimate aim of this research is to achieve a cross language comparison between the acoustic properties of Hanoi Vietnamese monophthongs and General American English monophthongs. The findings of the accomplished study are significant, from both the linguistic and pedagogical perspectives. Ladefoged states firmly that, “The best way of describing vowels is not in terms of the articulations involved, but in terms of their acoustic properties.” (2003, p.104). A considerable amount of space of this thesis is devoted to the researcher’s analysis of the monophthongs, or pure vowels (Wells, 1962, p.1) of Vietnamese, Hanoi dialect.
