A Study On The Effectiveness Of Authentic Versus Nonauthentic Supplementary Materials In English Listening Classes​

Listening comprehension plays an indispensable role in not only language competency mastery but also in knowledge accomplishment. However, many students at high schools in Vietnam still have problems with English listening comprehension in general and with relation to the supplementary materials for listening used in the classroom. Therefore, this research was carried out to investigate the effects of authentic versus non-authentic supplementary listening materials in enhancing listening comprehension with 70 students from two EFL classes in 11th grade. To seek the answer to the research question posed, data were gathered from three main data collection instruments including pre-treatment and post-treatment tests, questionnaires, and interviews. It was shown in the findings of the study that there was a statistically significant difference in the scores from the pre-test to the post-test in the experimental group, which means that authentic supplementary listening materials appeared to be a good tool to help students increase their reading comprehension. In addition, data collected from questionnaires and interviews indicates students showed positive attitudes towards the use of authentic supplementary listening materials.
