Applying Peer-Assessment To Improve Secondary School Students' English Speaking Skill​

This study investigates the effectiveness of peer assessment in improving English speaking skills among secondary school students in a rural setting in Vietnam. The research was conducted over an 8-week period with 38 seventh-grade students at Nghi Phong Secondary School in Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study employed pre-tests, post-tests, teacher observations, and analysis of peer feedback to evaluate the impact of peer assessment strategies on students' speaking abilities. The findings reveal significant improvements in students' speaking skills across various criteria, including vocabulary, grammar, fluency, pronunciation, and coherence. Quantitative data show a substantial increase in overall speaking scores, while qualitative observations indicate enhanced confidence and willingness to take risks in language use. The study also highlights the challenges and benefits of implementing peer assessment in a resource-constrained educational environment. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on peer assessment in language education and offers practical insights for educators seeking to enhance speaking skills in similar contexts. The findings suggest that peer assessment can be a valuable tool for improving English speaking proficiency, particularly in rural secondary schools with limited resources.
