Applying Shadowing Techniques To Improve 6th Graders' English Pronunciation​

In English communication, pronunciation is very important because it affects the level of understanding of the message spoken by the interlocutor. According to Jeong et al. (2018), achieving intelligibility is an excellent benchmark for non-native English speakers when learning English pronunciation. The listener's ability to distinguish the speaker's speech sounds and understand the message those sounds convey is called intelligible English pronunciation. Therefore, to improve their English speaking ability, non-native English speakers need to acquire and practice accurate and intelligible English pronunciation (Maini and Rachmanita, 2020). In Vietnam, English is taught through an integrated curriculum starting from primary school and extending to grade twelve. In this way, English pronunciation is taught with a level of English speaking proficiency and high scores in exams in secondary schools; including grade six. English pronunciation is a difficult skill for Vietnamese students because the phonetic structures of English and Vietnamese are different. In addition, there are many complex subtleties in English pronunciation, which makes it difficult for Vietnamese students to learn English pronunciation cues (Sugiarto et al., 2020).
