Classroom Debating - A Technique To Improve EFL 8th Graders’ Speaking Skill​

This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of using classroom debating on EFL 8 th graders’ speaking skill and their attitudes towards the technique. The project involved forty 8th-graders from two same-level classes at Green Tue Duc school, Cua Lo town. The participants followed the English general education curriculum for secondary school students. This project employed an experimental method, wherein one class was randomly selected as the experimental group and the other as the control group. During the course of ten-week experiment, students' speaking lessons incorporated classroom debating activities in the experimental group, while the control group was taught using the normal traditional methods. The students underwent the pre-treatment and post-treatment speaking tests as a part of the experiment to get data on changes in their improvisation and speaking skills. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was used to find out the students' attitudes towards the technique. The results of the project demonstrated the value of classroom debating in helping students boost their enthusiasm for speaking lessons and also improving their speaking skills in some aspects of spoken language including vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency.
