There are three reasons why I choose to carry out the research called “An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Materials on “English for Tour guides” for the 3rd year students of Foreign Languages and Tourism Department at Sao Do Industrial College and suggestions for adaptation”. The first reason is in the importance of a material or a text book in the process of learning and teaching foreign languages. ELT materials in general and textbooks in particular serve as tool and tutor, guidebook and gauge. The American Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development asserted that teachers throughout the world use texts to guide their instruction, so textbooks greatly influence how content is delivered. Schmidt, McKnight, and Raizen (1997) identified textbooks as playing an important role in making the leap from intensions and plans to classroom activities, by making content available, organizing it, and setting out learning tasks in a form designed to be appealing to students.
