Extensive Reading As A Method To Increase Efl High School Students’ Reading Motivation​

Whether extensive reading should be implemented in English education or not has constantly perplexed language practitioners and educators even though the majority of existing literature emphasizes its benefits in boosting students’ linguistic competence or changing their reading attitudes. Within Vietnamese context, extensive reading remains peculiar as a concept. Little empirical research concerning its impacts has been conducted and mostly at tertiary level. This paper seeks to investigate extensive reading as a method to increase EFL high school students’ motivation for reading. A total of 41 English-majored students from the High School for Gifted Students, Vinh University participated in the research. They were involved in online extensive reading over two months. Pre-treatment and post-treatment questionnaires, together with students’ weekly journals and teacher’s observation were employed as means of data collection. The findings indicated that extensive reading prompted an enhancement in students’ reading motivation across all 4 motivational constructs. They presented that online extensive reading helped the students build up their intrinsic motivation, become more self-confident as well as more fluent in English reading.
