Improving EFL Primary School Students’ English Vocabulary Retention Through Word Games​

This research entitled “Improving English as a Foreign Language (EFL) primary school students’ English vocabulary retention through word games” is intended to find out the effectiveness of using word games in learning and teaching English vocabulary to children, and stimulate children's interest in learning English vocabulary. Learning vocabulary in a foreign language, especially for beginners, poses significant challenges. Despite the availability of various strategies for lexical instruction, their utilization in the Vietnamese EFL setting remains limited. Hence, this study explores the suitability and effectiveness of integrating word games into English vocabulary teaching for primary stage students at the English center in Nghe An, Vietnam. A mixed-method research approach was adopted, spanning eight weeks and involving two grade 3 classes. Both classes, comprising 30 students each with similar English proficiency levels as determined by preliminary tests, were taught identical vocabulary lessons. However, one class utilized word games while the other followed conventional teaching methods. Data collection included pretest, posttest, observations and questionnaires. The experimental class demonstrated statistically superior vocabulary retention in the post-test compared to the control class after the eight-week intervention from April 15 to June 10, 2024.
