Perceptions Of Non-Majored Students And EFL Lecturers On The Use Of English As A Medium Of Instruction In EFL Classrooms At Hong Duc University​

Although the use of English is strongly encouraged, Vietnamese has been utilized in English as Foreign Language classes. Higher education faces with the deep concerns about this situation, the researcher carried out the study titled “Perceptions of Nonmajored students and EFL Lecturers on the Use of English as a Medium of Instruction in Second Language Classrooms at Hong Duc University”. The main purpose of this research was to find out the lecturers’ and students’ perceptions of using EMI in EFL classes, as well as to look for possible aspects hindering the use of English to teach English. The participants were 103 first-year non-English majored students at Hong Duc university and three English lecturers. The methods adopted were both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Questionnaires, interviews and observations were employed to triangulate the information from various aspects; therefore, the validity and the reliability of the research were guaranteed. The results showed that lecturers and students were aware of the necessity of using English in EFL classes, however, lecturers used both English and Vietnamese. The combination of two languages was used due to various hindering factors relating to both lecturers and students.
