The Use Of Skimming Technique In Teaching Reading To Efl 7th Graders​

This study explores the efficacy of the skimming technique in teaching reading to 7 th graders learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Skimming, a rapid reading strategy aimed at grasping the main ideas of a text, was integrated into the curriculum of a junior high school EFL program. The quasi-experimental design was employed involving two groups: an experimental group that received instruction in skimming and a control group that followed traditional reading instruction. Pre-tests and post-tests were utilized to measure the participants’ reading comprehension levels. The results indicated a significant improvement in the reading comprehension scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. Qualitative feedback from a questionnaire showed the students positive attitudes towards the application of skimming as a technique in reading. Based on the findings, some implications for English language learners and teachers have been suggested.
