With Vietnam’s entry into the WTO and opening its markets to the outside world, the demand for English speaking proficiency among people is rising. In recent years, the communicative approach has become more and more widely used in teaching and learning English at tertiary education and therefore, students’ communicative competence has been stressed. The needs of communication make listening teaching a priority all over the country. The need for competence in listening in English learners is increasingly recognized, so listening teaching has recently attracted considerable attention. However, careful observation of High School teaching practice has found that the teaching of listening skills is still the weak link in the language teaching process. Despite students having mastered the basic elements of English grammar and vocabulary, their listening comprehension is often weak.
